30 December 1995 to 6 January 1996
From 30 December 1995 until 6 January 1996 I was in Cyprus for a holiday. Although it was not a birding trip, there was enough time for watching birds and finding the following highlights:
1 Yelkouan Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan off Paphos.
1 juvenile Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis at Paphos (and 3 Cormorants).
1 adult Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus near Tala.
12 adult-non breeding plumage Greater Sand Plovers Charadrius leschenaultii at Paphos together with 1 adult-non breeding plumage Lesser Sand Plover Charadrius mongolus (to my knowledge extremely rare in Cyprus).
1 first winter Slender-billed Gull Larus genei at Paphos where has also been 1 Mediterranean Gull and 2 Little Gulls.
1 second winter Great Black-headed Gull Larus ichthyaetus also near Paphos.
3 Tawny Pipits Anthus campestris near Coral Bay.
1 Blue Rock Thrush (male) also at Coral Bay sitting on the top of an old ruins of course, several Sardinian Warblers and Cyprus Warblers nearly everywhere, and 1 female Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata at Coral Bay
These and some more common birds, together with the nice landscape and the interesting culture made this trip very successful and I will hold Cyprus in fond remembrance!
