CYPRUS TRIP REPORT

April 1994
Sorry I still haven't finished my report. I must try and get it done soon because I'm going back to Cyprus this April again (12-26th). The migration in April 1994 was apparently poor by Cyprus standards (too much clear weather) but nevertheless was very good. Phassouri was also very dry so not as good as it can be. As with Israel, David Gosneys booklet on Cyprus gives excellent info on all the main sites to visit and directions. The top end of the Dhiarizos river is good for Long-legged Buzzard, Griffon Vulture, Masked Shrike, Olivaceous Warbler etc, directions are in the posting by Colin Davies (see previous Cyprus trip report). Birds like Cyprus Warbler, Cyprus Pied Wheatear and Black Francolin are very easy.

Paphos is probably the best base as most of the good sites are in the west. It also allows a daily early morning visit to Paphos headland for migrants. There used to be a daily log kept in the cafe at the top of the road to Paphos lighthouse though I have a feeling that it may have moved somewhere else. There is also a phone hotline (which I don't have to hand).

I found Cyprus excellent for photography - plenty of birds and reptiles/snakes. There were also plenty of flowers in bloom in April but I'm afraid I didn't take much notice of them - lots of yellow ones I seem to remember!

If you want details on specific birds or sites, please get in touch.
