Records from the Aammiq Marshes late 2004 include a maximum of six Cattle Egrets Bubulcus ibis on 1 November. Up to 100 Night Herons Nycticorax nycticorax in September was the highest number ever seen at this site. A huge flock of 800 White Pelicans Pelecanus onocrotalus was above Lake Qaaroun on 5 October. Ninety-five Common Cranes Grus grus headed south over Khirbet Qanafar in the Bekaa Valley on 27 October. A White-breasted Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis was present from July and two were recorded on 2 October. Four Wigeon Anas penelope were rare visitors to the area on 13 December as were four Pintail A. acuta on 14 October. A Pallid Harrier Circus macrouros was present from mid-October until December. A Lesser Kestrel Falco naumannii was at Khirbet Qanafar on 23 September and a Steppe Grey Shrike Lanius [meridionalis] pallidirostris on 16 September just south of Aana. Finally a Scrub Warbler Scotocerca inquieta was near Khirbet Qanafar on 30 August. The species is rare in Lebanon. |
