NOF avd. Oslo and Akershus has a birdwatcing trip outside Norway each year. Poland in 1995, Spain in 1996, Denmark in 1997 and Cyprus this year. Cyprus was chosen for a number of reasons. It lies near the eastern flyway, and is therefore a "hot-spot" during migration. Both European and some "Asians" pours through. Although an island, it also holds a good variety of breeding species, and two "endemics". There have been lot’s of birders there over the years, and so the litterature is excellent. Although one of the largest islands in the Mediterrenean, its still a small country an even divided, so little transport is needed compared to other countries. And last, the infrastructure is in place, so

charter-trips is available thus making it possible to keep expences low.

We arrived Larnaca Airport, and had rented 7-seats Pajeros in advance. The hotell was situated in Paphos, which must be considered the best place to stay for birdwatching.

20/4: Larnaca-Paphos. Birdwatching in the evening at Paphos Ligthouse.

21/4: Paphos Lighthouse- Asprokemnos Dam- Diarizos Valley- Cape Aspro

22/4: Paphos-Phassouri-Akrotiri

23/4: Paphos- Asprokemnos-Mavrokolymbos area- Cape Drepanum

24/4: Paphos- Phassouri- Limassol- Zakaki- Bishop’s Pool- Kensington Cliffs

25/4: Paphos- Baths of Aphrodite and Ahkamas- Neo Khourion- Coral Bay

26/4: Paphos- Diarizos Valley- Troodos Mountains

27/4: Paphos- Larnaca Salt Lake (s)- departure from Larnaca

We made a mistake on the 22.nd. We tried the dirt track on the northern shore of the more or less dry Akrotiri Salt Lake. The track goes between the reed-beds and the "lake". After a while, both vehicles got stuck in the mud. We contacted the Police, and they were both understanding and helpful. (We also tried the British Military Base,- they were understanding but not helpful.) We got one car out that evening, but the company Rescueline had to use much of the next day on the other vehicle. In the mean time we rented new cars, and the trip went on. We must thank Rescueline for a marvellous effort, and also the Police for their helpfulness. The news travelled around, so most of the many birdwatchers on the island had soon heard about the norwegian "crazy-gang". However, we sorted the problems out, and the accident did not influence much on our plans.

The trip was a success. We "ticked" most of the important species, and saw a total of 153 during one week. This is an uofficial record for the island. The participants had a very good time together, the weather was nice and the wine and food too. Thank’s to all the positive participants !
